10 Smart Ways We Could Stop Wasting Energy

Once you know where to look, it's everywhere?dissipating, leaking away, drifting up in a puff of smoke. "When I see exhaust pipes and chimneys, I see wasted thermal energy," says Chris Nelson, president of Cyclone Power Technologies in Pompano Beach, Fla. Nelson, whose father, Richard, co-founded Cogenic Energy Systems, a pioneering combined-heat-and-power company, back in 1980, grew up hearing about squandered energy?and how to recapture it?over the dinner table. Now Cyclone is preparing to unveil a universal Waste Heat Engine that can generate electricity from the exhaust pipe of virtually any small-scale industrial engine or furnace. That may make the younger Nelson the first and only second-generation energy scavenger in America. If we're smart, he won't be the last.

How we'll fuel our future is often framed as a misleadingly simple, two-sided debate: We either have to produce more energy or use less. But that picture ignores a basic thermodynamic truth: For the same reason you should never pay cash for a perpetual motion machine, you can never make use of 100 percent of the energy you consume. Something is always lost in the conversion from fuel to work. While that may sound like bad news, it also introduces a third way to address future energy needs. Right now, our energy conversion is abysmal, nowhere near the theoretical limits of efficiency. But with smarter design and new technologies, we can get a lot closer to those limits.

Consider a simple action like walking down the street. The energy that fuels you originally comes from the sun and is stored by photosynthesis in the form of chemical bonds. "It turns out that food has about 100 times as much energy per unit mass as lithium batteries," says Max Donelan, head of the Locomotion Laboratory at Simon Fraser University in Vancouver, British Columbia. That means the average person can store as much energy as a 1-ton battery can. But the process of converting those chemical bonds into muscle contractions wastes much of the stored energy. The remainder is used to accelerate and decelerate your limbs?and that deceleration can be scavenged to generate power much like the regenerative braking in hybrid cars: Donelan has developed a lightweight knee brace that generates 12 watts of power from the simple act of walking?enough to give a cellphone 30 minutes of talk time after just 1 minute?with no extra effort.

The curse of inefficient conversions plagues everything from microchips to massive factories and power plants. When you boot up your laptop, the microprocessor inside is spewing heat that has to be dissipated by a heat sink and fan; the power brick that you plug into the wall is leaking energy in the conversion from AC to DC; and about 7 percent of the electricity generated at a distant power plant is wasted in transmission losses while traversing the grid before the juice ever reaches your home. The most common form of waste energy by far is heat, but power can also be squandered in unproductive motion (as in walking) or even in the millions of tons of edible food tossed into landfills. A 2010 University of Texas study estimated that discarded food contains more than 2000 trillion Btu of embodied energy each year.

No single solution can address all these different types of waste. Instead, we need to engineer creative approaches to fit each situation, as the University of New Hampshire learned after installing a gas-fired cogeneration plant in 2006. "The plant completely changed the way we think about managing energy on campus," says Paul Chamberlin, the university's assistant VP in charge of energy and campus development. The obvious gain was capturing excess heat that the turbine gave off while producing electricity and using it to heat campus buildings, boosting the generator's overall efficiency from 35 percent to a maximum of about 85 percent. Better yet, the university realized that landfill gas from a nearby dump, which otherwise would have simply flared into the atmosphere, could provide valuable extra fuel. Less obvious, though, was what to do with all that extra heat in the summer?"free steam," as Chamberlin puts it. The solution: The new UNH business school currently under construction will have steam absorption chillers instead of electric air conditioners, and other campus buildings will follow suit.

The biggest obstacles facing the quest for efficient energy conversion aren't just technical. We have an awareness problem. When it comes to curb appeal, a nearly invisible diode that converts AC to DC with virtually no loss can't compete with a shiny solar panel, even though the latter is less efficient. And, as a rallying cry, "Run your engine as close to the Carnot efficiency limit as possible without violating the second law of thermodynamics" will never replace "Drill, baby, drill!" So a philosophical shift is in order. Yes, we need to keep pursuing new energy resources, but we must also make the most of what we have now. "When it comes to solving our problems with fossil fuels and the environment, these technologies are really the low-hanging fruit," Nelson says. "They're available now; they just need to be pushed."

Could ?Watched On? Facebook News Feed Stories Save Netflix?

Facebook Netflix News Feed Story FinAfter a disastrous Q3 2011, Netflix stands to replace some of the 800,000 subscribers it lost. It's savior? The Facebook news feed. Earlier this month, the House of Representatives passed a revised bill to change the Video Privacy Protection Act of 1988 to allow people to opt in to having their movie rental activity shared. This Act had delayed the Netflix Facebook app's?launch in the US. Now the Facebook news feed is beginning to show "Josh Constine watched The Walking Dead on Netflix" stories that point back to the Netflix site. After being enticed by something a friend has watched, Facebook users might sign up and pay on Netflix.com so they can watch too.

Tribal Finance Program Now Online - ICTMN.com

Many of the nation's Native American reservations are in remote areas where Internet access is intermittent.

Distances stretch for miles on end and Internet access may be virtually nonexistent in many pockets of the nation?s Native American communities. Distance learning is a perfect fit to bring educational opportunities to remote areas.

Arizona State University (ASU) is launching its Tribal Financial Manager Certificate program?in a distance-learning format, providing access to tribal professionals who are unable to travel to the university for this vital course.

People who go through the program can now take the course online through Blackboard in a self-paced program or listen to CDs that can be played in a car, through iTunes or on an MP3 player. Or, they can continue to come to ASU for an intensive three-day session.

?If you?re driving a long distance, you can listen to the audio portion. We tried to provide as many options as possible,? said Pat Mariella, American Indian Policy Institute director.

The Tribal Financial Manager Certificate program has been a success since it began, attracting financial managers from tribes across the country who learn how to manage funds in a tribal setting.

?We?ve gotten tremendous feedback because it?s not taught anywhere else,? said Corrine Wilson, a Certified Public Accountant for Moss Adams who helped shape the program while she was vice president of the Native American Finance Officers Association (NAFOA). Wilson is also a current instructor in the program.

Launching the distance-learning portion of the program is the next logical step for the program that was started as a partnership between ASU?s American Indian Policy Institute and NAFOA. The Arizona Board of Regents provided seed funding for the program through an Arizona Regents Reach Out grant.

Learning how to manage finances for tribal governments is a specialized and complicated skill. As tribes move toward operating the full range of governmental functions, tribal members are taking over programs that were formally run by the Bureau of Indian Affairs and the federal government, said Eddie Brown, American Indian Studies professor and executive director of the American Indian Policy Institute.

?Tribes are responsible for running programs and applying financial resources appropriately. That gets very complex,? Brown said.

Managing funds requires that those doing the accounting understand the rules, regulations and laws that govern the money that tribes manage.

?Tribal governments also have their own laws to follow,? Wilson said.

For instance, since tribes typically don?t have property taxes, their unrestricted income is generally more commercial in nature. Internal Revenue Service laws are also different for tribes, she added.

Core focus areas of the program include federal Indian law from the perspective of financial management in tribal settings, tribal government accounting aspects that take into account self-determination contracting and self-governance compacting as well as taxation. Participants earn a professional certificate upon completion.

?There is a core curriculum that people need to understand. This is a critical tool that tribal governments need,? Mariella said. ?I jumped on it when we had the opportunity to develop the program at ASU in partnership with the Native American Finance Officers Association.?

Offering the program through distance learning provides another important option for tribal employees to learn about finances through the popular program.

?Through the in-classroom program, we have already trained close to 100 people from tribes throughout the United States. Tribes vote with their feet and we have a waiting list,? Mariella said. Costs for the program range from $1,500 to $1,950.

Being able to offer the program in a distance-learning format is part of ASU?s vision to bring the university to the community, Brown said.

?We?re delighted that ASU is able to offer that service,? Brown said. ?The Financial Manager Certificate Program is one example of how the university is reaching out to work with the community and provide the type of training that is so severely needed.?

Registration for both the distance learning program and the next in-classroom session from January 24-26, 2012 is now available online.

Snow and tears mark funeral for North Korean leader (Reuters)

SEOUL (Reuters) ? The world watched anxiously on Wednesday as North Korea staged a huge funeral in the capital, Pyongyang, for former leader Kim Jong-il, searching for signs of what to expect from the isolated nation that may be close to attaining nuclear weapons capacity.

Bleak pictures from state television showed a funeral cortege led by a limousine carrying a huge picture of the 69-year old, who died on December 17, passing serried ranks of olive green-clad soldiers whose bare heads were bowed in homage in the main square of the snow-covered capital.

A hearse carrying the coffin was led by a weeping Kim Jong-un, the son and heir, accompanied by Jang Song-thaek, his uncle and a key power-broker in the transition, and Ri Yong-ho, the army chief of staff.

"Seeing this white snow fall has made me think of the general's efforts and this brings tears to my eyes," Seo Ju-rim, a red-cheeked, weeping female soldier, told North Korean television, referring to Kim.

One of the myths surrounding Kim Jong-il was that he could control the weather and state media has reported unusually cold and wild weather accompanying his death.

Video showed weeping civilians who swayed with grief and shouted "father, father" as black Lincoln and Mercedes limousines and army trucks streamed past the crowds. It was not clear whether the pictures were live or recorded.

"I wished it was a dream, how can this be true," sobbed one middle-aged woman named Kim. "How can anything like this ever happen in the world?"

Kim Jong-un will become the third member of the family to run the unpredictable North Asian country as it enters 2012, the year that was supposed to mark its self-proclaimed transformation into a "strong and prosperous" nation.

Larry Niksch, who has tracked North Korea for the nonpartisan U.S. Congressional Research Service for 43 years, believes it could take as little as one to two years to have a working nuclear missile once the North produced enough highly enriched uranium for the warhead's core fuel.

The prospect of an untested leader, believed to be in his late 20s, having nuclear capacity has alarmed many.

"Yes, we are watching and will be analyzing how any changes can be reflected in our policy," a South Korean government official said. He was not authorized to speak to the media, so could not be identified.

UNCLE JANG, POWER BEHIND THE THRONE

State television showed Jang Song-thaek walking directly behind Kim Jong-un alongside the limousine carrying the coffin. Jang ranks a lowly 19th in the list of names on the state funeral committee but his public elevation confirms that he will play a key role in shaping policies.

An ascetic-looking, bespectacled 65-year-old, Jang has overcome a purge, bitter palace intrigue and personal tragedy to become vice chairman of the National Defense Commission, the supreme leadership council which Kim Jong-il led as head of the military state.

"Kim Jong-un is clearly the head of the new leadership but, in terms of hierarchy and influence, Jang appears to have secured considerable position," said Yoo Ho-yeol, a North Korea expert at Korea University in the south.

Strong it may be -- North Korea is backed by neighboring China, has conducted two nuclear tests and has a 1.2 million-strong armed forces -- but prosperous it is not.

On average, the 25 million North Koreans have a life expectancy three-and-a-half years lower than they did when "Eternal President" Kim Il-sung, the new leader's grandfather, died in 1994, according to U.N. data.

The United Nations, in a country program for 2011-15, says North Korea's main challenge is to "restore the economy to the level attained before 1990" and to alleviate food shortages for a third of its 25 million population.

Indications from the transition since Kim Jong-il's death suggest his "military first" policy will continue, leading to further hardship in a country that endured mass starvation in the 1990s.

Leverage from outside, with the exception of China, is limited. All the United States, South Korea and Japan can do is hope that the regime does not collapse, nor flex its military muscle as it did in 2010, when it shelled a South Korean island.

North Korea was established in 1948 and under its founding father, Kim Il-sung, went to war to try to conquer the South. It failed and in 1953 a dividing line that would become the world's most militarized frontier was drawn across the peninsula.

PROSPECTS OF A PURGE

While Kim Il-sung was revered by his people for fighting Japanese colonial rule, the halo surrounding his successors has steadily dimmed to such an extent that his grandson, the new ruler, will have to rely on people such as his uncle, Jang, to hold on to power, at least in the short term.

Official media in the North have built Kim Jong-un, a jowly and rotund man in his late 20s, into a leader worthy of inheriting the crown, naming him "respected general," "great successor," "outstanding leader" and "supreme commander."

This year, dissident groups based in South Korea, citing North Korean refugees and businessmen working in China, linked the youngest Kim to a crackdown on business activities and a tougher policy on people seeking to flee from North Korea.

Those reports could not be verified independently, but would again suggest that further repression is more likely than an economic opening under the new man.

It also gives little hope for the 200,000 North Koreans who human rights group Amnesty international says are enslaved in labor camps, subjected to torture and hunger or execution.

"There is likely to be a politically motivated purge and imprisonment, and it could go on for a considerable period of time," said Pak Sang-hak, who heads a group in Seoul working to support defectors, and is himself a defector.

"That is especially because of the relative instability of Kim Jong-un's leadership. There might also be persecution as a way of intimidation and discipline."

Andy Rubin tweets: 3.7 million Android activations in two days

Google?s Android head Andy Rubin tweeted just a few minutes ago that the number of Android activations on December 24th and 25th came in at 3.7 million. An impressive figure to be sure, but as we?ll explain in a post shortly, Apple also did quite well over the Christmas holiday as iOS activations this past weekend 12.5 times higher than in previous weekends.

All in all, great news for both Google and Apple. As for everyone else (we?re looking at you, Microsoft and RIM), it might be game over. Though to be fair, it?s been game over at RIM for quite some time now.

US weighing travel request for Yemen's president

HONOLULU (AP) -- The Obama administration is considering whether to allow Yemen's outgoing president into the United States for medical treatment, as fresh violence and political tensions flare in the strategically important Middle Eastern nation.

A senior administration official said President Ali Abdullah Saleh's office requested that he be allowed to receive specialized treatment in the U.S. for injuries sustained in a June attack on his compound. The request was being considered, and would only be approved for medical reasons, the official said.

Until now, the White House had not commented on Saleh's assertion Saturday that he would be leaving Yemen and traveling to the U.S. Saleh insisted he was going in order to help calm tensions in his country, not for medical treatment.

The official, who requested anonymity because of a lack of authorization to speak publicly, did not say when the Obama administration would decide on Saleh's request. But the official said Saleh's office indicated that he would leave Yemen soon and spend time elsewhere abroad before he hoped to come to the U.S.

Demonstrators began protesting against Saleh and calling for his ouster in February. The Yemeni government responded with a bloody crackdown, leaving hundreds of protesters dead, and stoking fears of instability in a nation already grappling with burgeoning extremism.

Last month, Saleh agreed to a U.S.- and Saudi-backed deal to hand power over to his vice president and commit to stepping down completely in exchange for immunity. The deal further angered Saleh's opponents, who demanded he be tried for his attacks on protesters.

American officials are deeply concerned that the months of turmoil in Yemen have led to a security breakdown. The dangerous al-Qaida branch in Yemen, known as al-Qaida in the Arabian Peninsula, has taken advantage of the vacuum to expend its presence in southern Yemen.

Pressure has been mounting in recent weeks for Saleh to leave Yemen altogether. Opponents say he has continued to wield influence through his loyalists and relatives still in positions of power, hampering the transition ahead of presidential elections set for Feb. 21. Many feared he would find a way to continue his rule.

Activists said troops commanded by Saleh's relatives attacked protesters in the capital of Sanaa Saturday, killing at least nine people. Tens of thousands of people demonstrated the following day, protesting the deaths and demanding the resignation of Vice President Abed Rabbo Mansour Hadi for failing to bring the killers to justice.

The White House said President Barack Obama's top counterterrorism adviser, John Brennan, called Hadi Sunday and emphasized the need for Yemeni security forces to show "maximum restraint" when dealing with demonstrations. Hadi told Brennan that he had launched an investigation into the recent deaths and injuries and would do his utmost to prevent further bloodshed, the White House said.

The White House said Brennan and Hadi agreed on the importance of continuing with the agreed-upon path of political transition in Yemen in order to ensure that the February elections take place.

Obama was being briefed on developments in Yemen while in Hawaii for his Christmas vacation.

The U.S. has experience with letting unpopular foreign leaders into this country for medical treatment.

More than three decades ago, President Jimmy Carter allowed the exiled shah of Iran into the U.S. for medical treatment in October 1979, eight months after Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini led a revolution that ousted the shah and created the Islamic Republic of Iran.

On Nov. 4, 1979, Iranian students occupied the U.S. embassy in Iran. Fifty-two American hostages were held for 444 days in response to Carter's refusal to send the shah back to Iran for trial.

Japan eases ban on weapons exports (AP)

TOKYO ? Japan on Tuesday announced a decision to ease its decades-long weapons export ban in a bid to lower purchase and production costs and take part in arms-development projects with other countries.

For a nation with a war-renouncing constitution written after World War II, lifting the ban is a sensitive issue, especially in Asia, where neighboring countries suffered under Japan's wartime aggression.

Chief Cabinet Secretary Osamu Fujimura said Japan maintains its pacifist principles prohibiting export of Japanese-made weapons for use in global conflicts.

He said that the new rules, approved by the government's security council, will allow Japan to participate in arms-building projects with other countries. Exports will be limited to projects related to peacekeeping and Japan's partners cannot sell technology or weapons to a third country without Tokyo's consent.

Japan already has eased the ban in projects with the United States, its biggest ally. The latest change extends the exception to other defense partners, including European nations and Australia.

Japan and the U.S. have jointly conducted weapons research and development to step up their security alliance, but that's not enough as Japan is expected to play a greater role in international peacekeeping, humanitarian support and take steps against piracy and terrorism, Fujimura said. The easing of the ban also allows Japanese defense contractors to get access to cutting-edge weapons technology and lower costs and acquire more competitiveness, he said.

"As the international society experiences major changes, we strengthen the alliance with the U.S. but we need to cooperate with other defense partners as well," Fujimura said in a statement. "We should acquire the most advanced defense technology to upgrade the capability of Japanese defense industry and cut production costs by pursuing international joint development and production of defense equipment."

The arms export ban dates back to 1967. But the government has long been under pressure from Japanese defense contractors who said the strict policy would hamper their competitiveness and access to technology. Officials have gradually modified rules over time, and Japan has allowed supplying of weapons technology to the U.S. and joint development of missile shields between the two allies.

The U.S. military has also urged flexibility as strict use of Japan's policy would prevent Washington from selling weapons using Japan-made components to other countries.

Huge defense procurement cost is a big concern. Japan earlier this month announced a costly deal by ordering 42 F-35 fighter jets from Lockheed Martin Corp. The Defense Ministry is requesting a budget 55.1 billion yen ($706.9 million) just for the first four of them next fiscal year, which starts in April.

Development and export of weapons parts by Japanese contractors would help to hold down costs.

Defense Minister Yasuo Ichikawa said Japan will stick to its principles even though the new rules could address cost and technology issues.

"The idea is to create a new framework while we firmly keep the philosophy in place," Ichikawa told reporters Saturday before the official announcement.

Air Dictate app brings Siri's voice control to Macs, makes you feel just a little more important

Well, this was probably inevitable. Given that we've already seen Siri respond to custom commands, replace your remote and adjust the temperature in your house, it shouldn't come as a surprise that someone, somewhere has figured out how to make her control Macs. That's what's going on with Air Dictate by Avatron, a new app that allows you to dictate memos and other Very Important Business so that it appears in your text editor, without you having to type it yourself. Once you download the $1 app, you'll need to visit Avatron's website, download the Air Dictate Receiver software for your Mac and make sure the two devices are connected to the same WiFi network. So far as we can tell, it should work with any application that accepts text input, though for now it's only compatible with Macs and the iPhone 4S (sorry, jailbreakers).

Students Help School Janitor After Cancer Diagnosis, Job Loss ...

Andy Barela gets hugs from Niwot students (credit: CBS)

Andy Barela gets hugs from Niwot students (credit: CBS)

NIWOT, Colo. (CBS4) ? He was diagnosed with cancer, lost his job, and couldn?t afford a family Christmas. Then a group of students he didn?t know came to the rescue.

It would be pretty easy to miss Andy Barela in the halls of Niwot High School. He was an after hours janitor and loved it.

?It?s a family-type school and they?ve been there for me,? Barela said.

But in March, his world crashed. Barela was diagnosed with colon cancer. He lost his job and the insurance that came with it because he had to go through treatment.

?I?ve got friends, family; they?re there. They tell me, ?Keep it going, Andy.? And I do. I won?t let it take me down,? Barela said.

Mentally, Barela was set, but money was a different story. He was $15,000 in debt and 5 months behind on his rent.

?I had to tell my kids, ?This is going to be a Christmas we?re not going to have,? he said.

Barela never knew a lot of the students at school, but that doesn?t mean they don?t care.

?I started listening and I was like, ?Is somebody outside?? ?

It was carolers ? a group spearheaded by Niwot students like Katelin Soocee. And they came bearing gifts ? $6,000 from donations. The story even made the local paper, the Longmont Times-Call.

?It was killer; it started making me shake ? like, ?Wow.? ?

?I definitely wanted to help. I didn?t want it to be a bad Christmas,? Soocee said. ?He helped out our school and made our experience better. I knew I had to help out.?

It just may have help save Barela?s home, health, and his family?s Christmas.

?Wow, that girl. I know her but I really never talked to her, and she did this,? Barela said.

Barela?s doctors tell him he will likely beat his cancer.

Niwot High School says Barella can return to his job whenever he feels ready.

Andy Barela Fund

Donations for Andy Barela and his family can be sent to or dropped off at Niwot High School, 8989 Niwot Road, attention of Debbie Hauck. Checks can be made out to Andy Barela. All proceeds will go directly to the family.
