SPRINGFIELD, Ohio (AP) ? A newly produced model of a Wright Brothers biplane crashed Saturday in the midst of its flight testing in rural Ohio, killing the two volunteer pilots aboard.

Both pilots had extensive experience flying the biplane, built by a company that uses the planes to promote public awareness of Dayton as the birthplace of aviation.

The pilots, 65-year-old Mitchell Cary and 73-year-old Don Gum, observed the highest standards of safety and made enormous contributions to the organization and the aviation heritage community, Phil Beaudoin, president of Wright "B'' Flyer Inc., said in a statement Saturday.

"They were good friends and we will miss them deeply," he said.

The pilots took the plane up around 10 a.m. Saturday, said Mick Lecocq, manager of Springfield Beckley Municipal Airport.

The Ohio State Highway Patrol, which is investigating, said it received a call shortly before 11 a.m. about the crash, in an area surrounded by cornfields about 3 miles from the airport.

The plane, dubbed "Silver Bird," was built to modern standards and approved for its test flight program by the Federal Aviation Administration, Beaudoin said.

The plane was the third produced by the company based at Dayton-Wright Brothers Airport near Dayton, and had completed about 25 hours of its mandatory 40 hours of flight testing, Beaudoin said.

Beaudoin said Wright "B'' Flyer Inc. flies and displays lookalikes of the Wright brothers' first production airplane, the Model B.

Springfield is about 45 miles west of Columbus.

Amnesty urges Iran to free US hikers (AFP)

LONDON (AFP) ? Amnesty on Friday renewed calls for Iran to release two young US hikers held on spying charges since July 2009, two days ahead of a fresh hearing in their case.

"Iranian authorities have held these men for two years, subjecting them to legal proceedings that fall far short of international fair trial standards," the London-based organisation said.

"The parody of justice must end here. By now it seems clear that the Iranian authorities have no legal basis for continuing to hold these US nationals, so they must be released and allowed to leave the country."

Shane Bauer, 28, and Josh Fattal, 29, were arrested with Sarah Shourd, 32, on the unmarked Iran-Iraq border on July 31, 2009. Tehran has accused the three of "spying and illegally entering the country."

They have pleaded not guilty to spying charges, saying they were hiking in northern Iraq's autonomous Kurdish region when they innocently strayed into Iran across the border.

Washington has vehemently denied Tehran's charges and has pressed for their release.

Shourd is being tried in absentia after she returned to the United States following her release on humanitarian and medical grounds in September 2010, for which bail of about 500,000 dollars was paid.

That's the theory of a pair of British researchers, who say early modern humans outnumbered Neanderthals by 10-to-1 in a region of southwestern France they studied.

Scientists have long debated the circumstances in which modern people replaced Neanderthals across Europe about 40,000 years ago. Leading researchers in the field challenged the research methods in the new study and added that the idea of a larger population prevailing is not new.

Other theories have focused on climate change, differences in Neanderthals' ability to think and other possibilities.

In the report, in Friday's edition of the journal Science, Paul Mellars and Jennifer C. French of England's Cambridge University contend that "numerical supremacy alone may have been a critical factor" in human dominance.

They conducted a statistical analysis of archaeological finds in France's Perigord region, and concluded that stone tools and animal food remains showing evidence of modern humans indicate a much larger population than of Neanderthals in the region. That, they said, would undermine the ability of the Neanderthals to compete for food and other necessities.

Paleoanthropologist Erik Trinkaus, of Washington University in St. Louis, commented that he had argued two years ago that evidence that early humans used more resources and engaged in more intensive labor probably indicated a larger population density.

In addition, Trinkaus challenged the data in the new report, commenting that the idea of using the number of human gathering sites and their size, tool counts, and other pieces of evidence "pooled together over millennia to estimate relative population sizes was long ago rejected by archaeologists."

Trinkaus said the number of human sites has little, if anything, to do with how many people were around. "For example, a highly mobile group of hunter-gatherers will leave vastly fewer, if any, recognizable sites than one that stayed put for major periods of the year and accumulated trash in one place," he said.

Several experts agreed the conclusion of the paper wasn't new.

Christopher Ramsey of the School of Archaeology at England's University of Oxford said it provided "more quantitative evidence for what many already thought to be the case ? that is that modern humans simply replaced Neanderthals by gaining higher population densities."

And Joao Zilhao, a research professor at the University of Barcelona, argued that the methods used to estimate the population were outdated. He said modern humans didn't simply replace Neanderthals anyway, "as the overwhelming genetic and paleontological evidence shows what happened was assimilation, not replacement."

After a win on July 5, the Mariners were 43-43 and 2 1/2 games back in the AL West, a pleasant early season surprise. But it all fell apart in a hurry. They are 44-60 14 1/2 games behind the Texas Rangers now.

"When I look back on what our club has done this year, and when I look back 20 years from now, I probably am not going to remember it," Yankees manager Joe Girardi said about being the team that snapped the skid. "They were going to win a game at some point. We didn't play well, and that's why we got beat."

The Mariners had lost Hernandez's previous five starts, but they had to gain some confidence in sending the AL Cy Young Award winner to the mound.

Hernandez (9-9) had never lost in the new Yankee Stadium, never even given up a run in two starts in the billion-dollar ballpark. The Mariners beat New York the past five times he started.

At least 100,000 join Oslo march in grief and unity (Reuters)

OSLO (Reuters) ? At least 100,000 people rallied in Oslo and tens of thousands more marched in cities across Norway on Monday in a nationwide expression of grief and unity over the massacre of 76 people by Anders Behring Breivik.

Breivik told a judge in a closed hearing on Monday his bombing and shooting rampage aimed to save Europe from a Muslim takeover, and said that "two more cells" existed in his group.

Police said they could not rule out the possibility that others were involved in Friday's attacks and they revised down the death toll to 76 from 93: eight dead in a bomb blast in Oslo and 68 at a Labour Party youth camp on Utoeya island.

Stoltenberg addressed the evening crowd, many of them holding up red and white roses for remembrance, his voice trembling with emotion: "By taking part you are saying a resounding 'yes' to democracy." He called the Rose March a "march for democracy, a march for tolerance, a march for unity."

"Evil can kill a person but never conquer a people."

In a country of 4.8 million, where a single murder makes front-page news, the solidarity rally was probably the biggest since World War Two.

"We are a small society and I think that makes everyone feel affected whether directly involved or not," said Jonas Waerstad, 26, who was one of the marchers.

Earlier in the day, a handful of enraged protesters awaited Breivik at Oslo District Court.

"Get out, get out!" shouted one, banging on a police car he wrongly believed contained the self-confessed mass killer. In fact police drove Breivik to the court in another vehicle.

"Everyone here wants him dead," he said, adding that he knew one of the dead and three survivors of the attacks.

"We want to see him really hurt for what he did," said Zezo Hasab, 32, among the jeering protesters outside the court.

Breivik had wanted to explain in public why he perpetrated modern-day Norway's worst peacetime massacre. He was denied a public platform, but judge Kim Heger in his news conference, gave an account of what the accused 32-year-old had said.

After the hearing, a police jeep drove away carrying an unshaven Breivik, with close-cropped blond hair and wearing a red jumper with a lighter red shirt underneath.

QUESTIONS FOR POLICE

Police handling of the crisis may come under more scrutiny after the revision to the death toll, which a police spokesman attributed to difficulties in gathering information at Utoeya.

Daily Dagsavisen asked "Why didn't you come earlier?" citing screams by youths as police arrived on the island -- an hour after they were notified of the shooting.

Police efforts to reach the island stalled after one boat, overloaded with officers and equipment, was forced to stop when it began to take on water.

Breivik's name had appeared, via Interpol, on a list of 50-60 Norwegians after he paid 120 Norwegian crowns ($22.16) to a Polish company that was under surveillance because of its sale of chemicals, Norway's NRK television said.

Breivik leased a farm and bought fertilizers.

"We get masses of information about very many people," PST security police chief Janne Kristiansen told NRK. She said PST checked names on the list against PST watch lists but that "we had absolutely nothing on Behring Breivik" and it was dropped.

She said his Internet and Facebook profiles looked moderate although he took part in some extremist chat rooms.

It was not clear whether Breivik is in fact part of an organization, although he has written about a revival of the Knights Templar, a medieval order of crusading monks.

"MASS IMPORTS OF MUSLIMS"

Judge Heger said Breivik had accused the ruling Labour Party of betraying Norway with "mass imports of Muslims."

He said his bombing of government buildings in Oslo and massacre at a summer camp for Labour's youth wing was aimed at deterring future recruitment to the party.

"The goal of the attack was to give a strong signal to the people," the judge quoted Breivik as saying.

Breivik's custody can be extended before a trial on terrorism charges. Police say the trial could be a year away. Heger said he had ordered Breivik detained in solitary confinement for eight weeks, with no letters, newspapers or visits, except from a lawyer.

The detention, in line with a request from prosecutors, will allow them to investigate the case against Breivik.

In a rambling 1,500-page tract posted online just before the massacre, Breivik explained how violence was needed to rescue Europe from Islam, immigration and multi-culturalism.

If he survived his assault and was arrested, this would "mark the initiation of the propaganda phase," he wrote.

The judge's decision to close the hearing to the public followed an outcry from Norwegians incensed at the possibility that Breivik would be allowed a public platform for his views.

A Facebook group called "Boycott Anders Behring Breivik" carried the message: "He has planned this stage, to get propaganda. Do NOT let him get that freedom ... Boycott all media describing the Norwegian terrorist and his beliefs."

The maximum jail term in Norway is 21 years, though that can be extended indefinitely if there is a risk of repeat offences.

The attack was likely to tone down the immigration debate ahead of September local elections, analysts said, as parties try to distance themselves from Breivik's beliefs and reinforce Norwegians' self-image as an open, peaceful people.

Party leaders have agreed to delay the start of campaigning for the polls until mid-August, Norwegian news agency NTB said.

Norway's immigrant numbers nearly tripled between 1995 and 2010 to almost half a million. Arguments that many were drawn by generous welfare handouts spurred the growth of the Progress Party which became Norway's second biggest in parliament after the 2009 election on a largely anti-immigration platform.

Breivik once belonged to the party, but left saying it was too politically correct. He then began scheming to "resist," burying ammunition, weight-lifting, storing credit cards and researching bomb-making while playing online war games.

After three months of making explosives on a remote farm, Breivik drove a hire car packed with the device to Oslo, detonating it outside government offices. He then drove to Utoeya, 45 km (28 miles) away.

The entry of Morocco, since 1st July 2011, into the Pompidou Group reflects the country?s progressive integration into the different structures of the Council of Europe, as the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE) has already granted the Kingdom the ?Partner for Democracy? status on June.

Morocco, first non-European country to join the Strasburg-based Group, subsequently took part, on 27-28 November 2006, for the first time as an observer country in the ministerial conference of the Pompidou Group, said a statement of the organization.

Morocco asked the Pompidou Group to accept its application for membership on 22 February 2010, at the seminar on prospects for co-operation between the Kingdom and the Council of Europe, while its collaboration with the group begun in 1999, said the same source.

The Pompidou Group, an organ within the Council of Europe for the fight against drug abuse and illicit trafficking in drugs, started its activities in the Mediterranean Region in Malta in 1999 by holding a conference on ?co-operation in the Mediterranean region on drug use: setting-up networks in the Mediterranean region?.

The Pompidou Group?s core mission is to contribute to the development of multidisciplinary, innovative, effective and evidence-based drug policies in its member states.

Winehouse family visits tributes before post-mortem (AFP)

LONDON (AFP) ? Amy Winehouse's parents visited the tributes laid by fans to the British soul singer as they awaited a post-mortem on Monday which should determine how the 27-year-old died.

Taxi driver Mitch Winehouse and his wife Janis went to see the growing collection of flowers, messages, candles, as well as beer cans and vodka bottles, placed outside their daughter's home in Camden Square, north London.

The singer's family said they had been left "bereft" by her death on Saturday, which remains unexplained until the results of the post-mortem examination.

Mitch Winehouse, who flew back from New York after hearing of his daughter's death, could barely speak as he was consoled by fans and well-wishers outside her home.

"Thank you for coming. This means so much to my family," he said, his voice cracking with emotion.

Winehouse was particularly close to her father, a jazz aficionado, who inspired her love of music by singing to her when she was a child.

"You people in the street, I can't tell you what this means to us. It really is making this a lot easier for us," he said.

"Amy was about one thing and that was love. Her whole life was devoted to her family and her friends.

"We're devastated and I'm speechless."

The singer's mother was in tears when she looked at the tributes and took pictures of them on her mobile phone.

Police said the post-mortem would be conducted Monday at the nearby St Pancras Mortuary, with the formal inquest to open and adjourn later at St Pancras Coroner's Court.

Inquests in England establish the identity of the deceased, the place, time and cause of death. Toxicology tests can take weeks.

With her sultry vocals and trademark beehive hairstyle, Winehouse was considered one of the finest British female singers for years, but her drink and drug addictions often overshadowed her talent.

Her 2003 debut album "Frank" was a big hit in Britain, but her second album "Back to Black", released in 2006, contained her biggest-selling single "Rehab" and propelled her to international success, landing her five Grammy awards.

Sales of Winehouse's records have surged since her death, with "Back to Black" re-entering the charts at 59 on Sunday, the Official Charts Company said.

"Already the popularity of Amy's music with the British public is being demonstrated, with sales of her albums rocketing by 37 times over the past 24 hours," said the company's director, Martin Talbot.

Winehouse often laid bare her demons in her lyrics, but they increasingly took over, and she had to scrap a European comeback tour after stumbling through the opening performance in Belgrade on June 18.

Media reports Monday said that with her health frail, her doctor had paid a routine check-up visit on Friday evening and left with no concerns.

Winehouse had spoken to her security guard at around 10:00 am Saturday, some six hours before she was found dead by ambulance staff, the BBC and The Sun newspaper reported.

"Amy was on her own at home apart from a security guard who we had appointed to help look after her over the past couple of years," Winehouse's spokesman Chris Goodman told The Sun.

"She was in her bedroom after saying she wanted to sleep and when he went to wake her he found she wasn't breathing.

"He called the emergency services straight away. He was very shocked.

"At this stage nobody knows how she died. She died alone in bed."

London Ambulance said that emergency services were called at 3:54 pm, and within minutes medics found the singer dead.
