SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (AP) ? Illinois is the fourth state to allow illegal immigrants to obtain a driver's license with a new law signed by the governor.

Democratic Gov. Pat Quinn signed the legislation Sunday surrounded by hundreds of supporters who say the measure will make Illinois' roads safer and expand opportunities for illegal immigrants.

Quinn says people need a way to get to work, drive to the doctor and drive their children to school. Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel says the new law should serve as a model for the nation.

New Mexico and Washington both issue licenses to undocumented immigrants, while Utah issues permits.

Illinois officials say the dissemination of the temporary licenses is expected to begin in November.

The legislation was billed as a public safety measure and had bipartisan support.

Police and protesters clash in Egypt, army sent to Suez

CAIRO (Reuters) - Egyptian protesters scuffled with police in Cairo on Saturday and troops were deployed in Suez after nine people were shot dead in nationwide protests against President Mohamed Mursi, exposing deep rifts two years after Hosni Mubarak was ousted.

After a day of clashes on Friday, tension remained high with a court expected to rule later on Saturday in a case against suspects accused of involvement in a stadium disaster that killed 74 people. Fans have threatened violence if the court does not deliver the justice they seek.

Eight people including a policeman were shot dead in Suez, east of the capital, and another was shot and killed in Ismailia, another city on the Suez Canal, medics said, after a day when police fired tear gas at stone-throwing youths.

Another 456 people were injured across Egypt, officials said, in Friday's unrest fuelled by anger at Mursi and his Islamist allies over what the protesters see as their betrayal of the revolution that erupted on January 25, 2011.

"We want to change the president and the government. We are tired of this regime. Nothing has changed," said Mahmoud Suleiman, 22, in Cairo's Tahrir Square, near where youths were still hurling stones at police on the other side of a concrete barrier early on Saturday morning.

The protests and violence have laid bare the divide between the Islamists and their secular rivals. The schism is hindering the efforts of Mursi, elected in June, to revive an economy in crisis and reverse a plunge in Egypt's currency by enticing back investors and tourists.

Protesters accuse Mursi and his Islamist allies of hijacking Egypt's revolution that ended 30 years of Mubarak's autocratic rule. Mursi's supporters say their critics are ignoring democratic principles after elections swept Islamists to office.

"The protests will continue until we realize all the demands of the revolution - bread, freedom and social justice," Ahmed Salama, 28, a protester camped out with dozens of others in Tahrir Square, the cauldron of the 2011 revolt.

The court hearing over the Port Said stadium disaster in February last year has fuelled concerns of more unrest.

Live images were shown from inside the court shortly before the session began. Some of those attending chanted for justice and held up pictures of those killed.

The court on the outskirts on Cairo, and in the same police compound where Mubarak was tried and jailed, is due to rule on Saturday in the cases brought against 73 people, 61 of whom are charged with murder in what was Egypt's worst stadium disaster.

However, the public prosecutor has said new evidence has emerged, meaning a verdict may be postponed.

PRESIDENT URGES CALM

Alongside the 61 charged with murder, another 12 defendants, including nine police officers, are accused of helping to cause the February 1, 2012, disaster at the end of a match between Cairo's Al Ahly and al-Masri, the local side.

Expecting a verdict, hardcore Al Ahly fans, known as ultras, have protested in Cairo over the last week, obstructing the transport network. The Port Said disaster triggered days of street battles near the Interior Ministry in Cairo last year.

In a statement in response to Friday's violence, Mursi said the state would not hesitate in "pursuing the criminals and delivering them to justice". He urged Egyptians to respect the principles of the revolution by expressing views peacefully.

The president was due to meet later on Saturday with the National Defense Council, which includes senior ministers and security officials, to discuss the violence and deaths as a result of the protests.

Troops were deployed in Suez after the head of the state security police in the city asked for reinforcements. The army distributed pamphlets to residents assuring them the deployment was temporary and meant to secure the city.

"We have asked the armed forces to send reinforcements on the ground until we pass this difficult period," Adel Refaat, head of state security in Suez, told state television.

Street battles erupted in cities including Cairo, Alexandria, Suez and Port Said. Arsonists attacked at least two state-owned buildings. An office used by the Muslim Brotherhood's political party was also torched.

The Brotherhood decided against mobilizing for the anniversary, wary of the scope for more conflict after December's violence, stoked by Mursi's decision to fast-track an Islamist-tinged constitution rejected by his opponents.

Inspired by the popular uprising in Tunisia, Egypt's revolution spurred further revolts across the Arab world. But the sense of common purpose that united Egyptians two years ago has given way to internal strife that already triggered bloody street battles last month.

Ghana arrest Ble Goude wanted in Ivory Coast

ABIDJAN, Ivory Coast (AP) ? A lawyer says authorities in Ghana have arrested Charles Ble Goude, the former head of a youth movement in Ivory Coast wanted in connection with violence linked to its disputed presidential election two years ago.

Netherlands-based attorney Nick Kaufman says he has been in contact with Ghanaian officials seeking the legal grounds for the arrest early Thursday of Ble Goude, who had been in hiding.

Ble Goude is former leader of a youth organization linked to former Ivory Coast President Laurent Gbagbo. Ble Goude has been implicated by Human Rights Watch in grave crimes committed during violence linked to an electoral dispute in late 2010 and early 2011 between Gbagbo and the current Ivory Coast president, Alassane Ouattara.

Ivory Coast officials have sought the arrest of Ble Goude.

LAS VEGAS?The Adult Entertainment Expo, the nation's premier porn convention, at first might seem like any other business gathering, with free tote bags branded with the logo of a corporate sponsor and a thick program of seminars. But that impression doesn't last long.

On Wednesday afternoon, more than 50 people packed into a conference room at the Hard Rock Hotel just off the Strip. Some of the men wore suits that looked as though they had just been pulled off the rack at a Men?s Warehouse, while the women teetered around in tall high heels that seemed more like stilts than shoes. All were taking meticulous notes?some on their iPads?about how to generate media coverage for their business.

?A lot of the outlets I deal with are not really interested in helping you promote your products,? Jay Kopita, a longtime publicist, explained to his audience. ?So unless there?s some sort of interesting angle, it?s gotta be something really newsworthy, something really relevant.?

Kopita paused for moment. ?Obviously, promoting a mother and daughter going tag team is kind of an easy sell,? Kopita added matter-of-factly, referencing two of his clients who had recently appeared on Anderson Cooper?s syndicated talk show to discuss their joint adult film venture.

A titter of laughter moved through the room.

It was day one of the Expo, an annual event sponsored by Adult Video News, the porn industry?s most important publication. Every year, an estimated 30,000 people descend on Sin City for the confab?the industry types to hobnob with each other and test out the latest sex toys, and fans hoping to meet their favorite adult film star.

The runaway success of the "50 Shades of Grey" trilogy has also made adult entertainment more mainstream.

On Wednesday, the convention kicked off with a brief seminar dubbed the ?Home Room? to allow organizers to give first-time attendees tips about how to navigate the four-day affair. Some in the audience already looked rough for the wear?collapsing at conference room tables with plastic cups of Bloody Marys that looked and smelled more like a glass of vodka with a splash of tomato juice.

There had been some convention prepartying the night before, a woman who gave her name as ?Mistress Lisa,? told me, as she sipped her drink and tried to look alive. ?I?ll be fine in an hour,? she said in a hoarse voice.

At the front, an AVN editor, Sherri L. Shaulis, was dispensing advice on how to make it through the conference alive.

?Hand sanitizer IS YOUR FRIEND,? she declared, emphasizing her words into the microphone. ?There is a CVS across the street. ? Buy hand sanitizer by the gallons. Seriously.?

Shaulis also urged people to drink as much water as possible?even as she acknowledged there was a stocked bar literally every few feet at the convention. ?We are trying to get you guys liquored up,? she admitted. ?But control yourself. ? You don?t want to be that person who got so drunk they got kicked out of a porn convention, OK??

In the hallways, it would have been easy to mistake the event for something a local chamber of commerce might have sponsored. There were people trolling the hotel corridors with rolling briefcases full of paperwork and legal-size notepads already scribbled up with notes. People were crowded into groups, shaking hands and exchanging business cards.

But just when it would seem that this event was as boring as any other business convention, it simply took a glimpse at someone?s name badge to remind that this was different. Few people, except for reporters, appeared to be using real names.

There were many women named ?Candy? and several who claimed the surname ?Mistress,? including the aforementioned ?Mistress Lisa? and a ?Mistress Veronica.? One man had a badge that simply read ?Dude.?

?Nobody uses their real name,? a man, whose attendee badge read, ?One Bitchin Guy,? told me. ?Everybody has a stage name, even if you aren?t talent.?

Not everybody seemed to be on scene purely for business. During the afternoon, dozens of porn stars crowded into the large expo hall to pose for photos and sign autographs for industry types and some who clutched cameras and claimed to be members of the press.

Actress Jesse Jane, an industry veteran who had her breasts redone so that they would look better on high definition television, stood for three hours gamely posing for photos and signing autographs. Standing just over 5 feet tall, Jane had packed her tiny frame into a skin tight pink minidress and greeted every person she met with the excited disposition of a high school cheerleader.

?HELLO! How are you?!? she chirped. ?I?m awesome!?

Jane posed for photo after photo?clutching even the creepiest of the creepy close and tight. Even though she was tiny, the men she hugged often looked as though they might faint.

?I loooooove coming here,? Jane said, admitting she didn?t really know how many times she had attended the confab. ?I do this for my fans. These are the people that keep us going. They are amazing! Without them, we are nothing.?

It seemed the women were willing to do anything to satisfy the fans?except for actually getting naked, which is legally prohibited under convention guidelines though the rules have been skirted at past adult expos.

In the convention hall, women in tiny bikinis and six-inch heels paraded around, heeding requests from amateur photographers asking them to contort their bodies in a litany of provocative positions. At one point, a woman wearing a tiny bikini that was decorated to look like leaves nearly toppled over in her sky high red heels as she tried to look as sexy as possible for a pack of photographers.

But it wasn?t just women. James Deen, one of the industry?s most popular male stars, was holding court nearby in his own booth?though he seemed to be attracting more reporters than actual fans.

Deen, who is famous in the industry for being well-endowed and sells a line of dildos modeled after his own penis, recently jumped the line between porn and mainstream films by starring in ?The Canyons? with Lindsay Lohan?a tumultuous filming process that was recently documented in the New York Times Magazine. On Wednesday, Deen was so besieged by reporters that he had a handler whose sole job appeared to be keeping those who had not requested interviews in advance away from the star.

In seminars, industry veterans passed on their pearls of wisdom about how to best utilize the week?delivering speeches that seemed straight of out of the movie ?Boogie Nights.? At one point, Brian Gross, a longtime adult entertainment publicist, asked members of the audience to raise their hands if they were new to the industry. More than half the room did.

?The biggest lesson for all of you is this is a small, family oriented industry. We all know each other. It is really important you get in with people that you trust, people who have experience, people that have the background,? Gross told the room. ?It is unlike any other industry in the world, based on the fact that you are getting into something, that for better or worse, is taboo. You might be questioning, ?What am I doing?? ? To get into this industry and be successful, you have to be confident in who you are and what your product is. It is important that you have relationships with the right people.?

Near the back of the room, a woman quickly grabbed her pen and legal pad and made a note of what Gross had said.

?CONFIDENCE!!? she wrote.

TEL AVIV, Israel (AP) ? Little known outside Israel, political newcomer Yair Lapid could soon become the moderate face to the world of an otherwise hard-line government after next week's parliamentary election.

Gamely predicting he will one day be prime minister, the cosmopolitan Lapid stands out in a political landscape crowded with ex-officers, lawyers and apparatchiks: perpetually dressed in black and coiffed in high style, he is a former TV news anchor, movie star, talk show host, novelist, newspaper columnist and amateur boxer.

Lapid said he would not be a "fig leaf" in an extremist government and will make firm demands in exchange for joining, including an end to the country's preferential treatment of ultra-Orthodox Jews and the resumption of peace talks with the Palestinians.

"I think it is crucial that we take the path of being part of the Western, civilized world and the international community," Lapid told The Associated Press. "I don't want a country that is defined by religion. I don't want a country that is defined by the separation of groups and sectors."

The 49-year-old Lapid was one of Israel's best-known faces, writing a popular newspaper column ? ? in which he often discussed his wife and children and various personal matters ? and hosting a top-rated weekend news program when he abruptly declared a year ago that he was entering politics.

Despite being the son of a former Cabinet minister and living in an exclusive Tel Aviv neighborhood, he billed himself as an average Israeli, representing the interests of middle class people struggling to get by in a country torn by conflict and a high cost of living.

His "Yesh Atid" ? "There is a Future" ? party has grown into a formidable movement. Opinion polls predict the party will win perhaps a tenth of the seats in the 120-member parliament, which could make it the fourth-largest faction. But thanks to Israel's coalition system, Lapid could end up wielding influence far beyond his party's size.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's faction ? a union of his Likud with the even more nationalist Israel Beitenu ? is poised to emerge as the largest, with over 30 seats, according to the polls. Together with his traditional allies, hard-line nationalist and religious parties, he is expected to manage a majority at least 61 seats.

However, there is a strong sense among many Israelis that such a nationalist coalition would be disastrous for the country ? and that sense seems especially strong among the elites who are the natural milieu of both Lapid and Netanyahu.

This has led to much speculation that after a stormy four-year tenure characterized by deadlock in Mideast peace efforts and repeated clashes with the U.S. and other allies, Netanyahu will pursue a more centrist coalition.

That has left Lapid as a potential coalition partner, putting him in a strong position to demand a high-profile Cabinet post.

Despite opposing stands on most issues both Netanyahu and Lapid have encouraged the speculation by openly discussing the possibility. Often heard is the idea of Lapid as education minister.

Lapid repeatedly declares his deep regret about Netanyahu's strong poll showings but tends to follow that with what has become a stock phrase of sorts: "Let's be practical." He then explains how important it is to pull Netanyahu toward the center and free him from dependence on the most extreme nationalists.

A similar logic applied to the other main players on the center-left. But Labor Party leader Shelly Yachimovich recently declared she would not join Netanyahu under any circumstances, and former Foreign Minister Tzipi Livni, who has founded a new party dedicated to promoting peace with the Palestinians, has a testy relationship with the prime minister.

Lapid could give Netanyahu an attractive new face to present to the world. He is a regular fixture on lists of Israel's sexiest men, dresses stylishly, claims to work out every day and speaks impeccable English.

During the interview in the book-lined basement study of his Tel Aviv home, he quoted Albert Einstein, Aldous Huxley's "Brave New World" and "The Godfather," and proudly displayed a pair of boxing gloves autographed by Muhammad Ali. Discussing his own crime novels, he professes his admiration for Raymond Chandler.

For Lapid, a place inside the government could boost his fledgling party and provide a springboard to his larger ambition: becoming prime minister one day.

But he vowed to drive a hard bargain, seeking guarantees that the new government would adopt his agenda. "I will not sit as a fig leaf for ultra-Orthodox extreme rightists," he said.

Accomplishing this goal will not be easy, since Lapid's targets include well-entrenched interest groups aligned with Netanyahu's party ? especially the country's ultra-Orthodox population.

Making up roughly 10 percent of the population, the ultra-Orthodox have long used their political influence to win key benefits. Tens of thousands of ultra-Orthodox men receive exemptions from compulsory military service in order to pursue religious studies. These benefits continue well into adulthood, with a welfare system that allows the men to continue religious studies. These benefits have bred widespread resentment among the secular majority, which pays heavy taxes and generally serves in the military.

Lapid called religious study a "beautiful thing" but said the current system is unsustainable. "We can't support this anymore," he said. "They need to go out to work."

Lapid also criticized Netanyahu's failure to hold any substantive negotiations with the Palestinians.

The Palestinians claim all of the West Bank and east Jerusalem ? captured by Israel in the 1967 Mideast war ? as parts of a future state and have refused to negotiate with Netanyahu while he continues to build Jewish settlements in the two areas. Netanyahu rejects a full withdrawal from the West Bank and opposes any division of Jerusalem. The Palestinians seek the city's eastern sector, home to sensitive Jewish, Christian and Muslim holy sites, as their capital.

Israeli doves like Livni say a Palestinian state is needed not only to end decades of conflict, but also to save Israel. Continued control over millions of disenfranchised Palestinians, they say, could turn Israel into an apartheid-like state of a Jewish minority ruling over an Arab majority.

Netanyahu himself has acknowledged the need to establish a Palestinian state. But critics, including Lapid, accuse the Israeli leader of not doing enough to pursue this vision.

"I think if the prime minister really wanted to negotiate ... then he would have. I think this is part of what I'm going to do, make the government do this because it's so important in my mind," he said.

Lapid's vision of a Palestinian state is far more generous than Netanyahu's. He favors a near-total withdrawal from the West Bank, retaining major settlement "blocs" along the border. But on the emotional issue of Jerusalem, Lapid sides with Netanyahu, opposing any division of the holy city.

Lapid said his late father, the former Cabinet Minister Joseph Lapid, survived the Holocaust and resettled in the holy land because of Jerusalem, saying the city "is the reason we are here and if we have to fight for it we will fight for it."

He expressed confidence that the Palestinians would eventually come to terms with this and relinquish their claim to the city ? a position that would seem unrealistic given the Palestinians' own emotional attachment to Jerusalem, home to the revered Al-Aqsa Mosque.

While calling the Palestinian president a "partner" for peace, Lapid also accused Mahmoud Abbas of intransigence and rejecting past Israeli peace offers. The Palestinians reject this narrative, saying Israeli peace offers have not been as generous as billed.

They will also be disappointed by the absence of urgency emanating from Lapid.

"I think that working out of panic is always wrong. We don't need to be hysterical about it," he said.

Lapid insisted his joining the government is not a sure thing, saying his "values are not for sale.

That said, one must be practical.

"Politics ? you know what, life ? is the art of compromise," he said. "I'm married ? I should know."

Florida makes final push to find homeowners

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. ? Florida is making a final effort to find former homeowners who may be eligible for payments as part of a national settlement with five major lenders.

The deadline to file a claim under the settlement is this Friday. The settlement applies to loan that were serviced by Bank of America, Wells Fargo, JP Morgan Chase, Citi or GMAC/Ally.

Florida Attorney General Pam Bondi announced Wednesday that she has hired a company to make phone calls to tens of thousands of people who lost their homes to foreclosure between 2008 and 2011. The state plans to spend up to $187,000 on the effort.

So far less than half of the estimated 167,000 people in Florida eligible for payments have responded to previous outreach efforts.

NEW YORK (AP) ? From nearly unstoppable to nearly invisible.

Tim Tebow was two wins from the Super Bowl a year ago. Now, he's pretty much a player without a team ? likely to be released by the New York Jets after one frustrating season and his hometown team in Jacksonville already pulling in the welcome mat.

Even Tebow doesn't how this will unfold. A backup role on another NFL team? A position change? The Canadian Football League?

"I don't know what my future holds, but I know who holds my future," the devout Christian said in a recent interview with Fox Business Network, his only public comments since his strange Jets season ended.

"And, in that," he added, "there is a lot of peace and a lot of comfort."

Tebow barely played for the Jets last season. "An absolute mess," is the way recently retired special teams coordinator Mike Westhoff described it. Tebow has two years left on his contract, but New York is expected to trade or release him in the next few weeks. So far, destination unknown.

"I can't imagine a scenario in which he'll be a Jacksonville Jaguar," new general manager David Caldwell declared last week. "Even if he's released."

While there's an outside chance Tebow could remain a New Yorker, depending on the whims of the still -to-be-hired GM, it appears highly unlikely.

So, that's two NFL teams down ? the only ones, at that, who showed any interest last offseason when Denver shopped him ? and the 25-year-old Tebow's options appear to be dwindling.

"Tim Tebow is an extremely popular individual ? or, he was," said former Cowboys executive Gil Brandt, now an analyst for NFL.com. "I think his popularity has waned significantly the last three or four months."

The buzz these days belongs to young quarterbacks like Washington's Robert Griffin III, Seattle's Russell Wilson, Indianapolis' Andrew Luck and San Francisco's Colin Kaepernick. It seems so long ago now that Tebowing ? his signature dropping to a knee for a prayerful pose ? was all the rage.

But even Tebow never Tebowed during the regular season for the Jets. Not once. Quite a fall for a Heisman Trophy winner and two-time national champion with the University of Florida, and whose No. 15 Broncos jersey ranked second in national sales to Green Bay's Aaron Rodgers in 2011.

"I think it's fair to say," Tebow acknowledged last month, "that I'm a little disappointed."

The Jets had every intention of trying to make things work with Tebow when general manager Mike Tannenbaum surprisingly acquired him from Denver last March ? after Peyton Manning arrived ? for a fourth-round draft pick. But once Tebow got on the field, something went woefully wrong.

Tebow went from being considered a key part of Rex Ryan's offense to almost non-existent. Offensive coordinator Tony Sparano didn't know how to use him effectively, and Tebow wasn't particularly productive when he got his few snaps in the wildcat-style formation. He made his biggest mark on special teams as the personal punt protector, and did all he could to hide his frustration at not playing. But the numbers said it all: a mere 102 yards rushing and 6-of-8 passing for 39 yards. And, the most damning stat of all: zero touchdowns.

"I would've liked to see him get a chance," defensive end Mike DeVito said.

It didn't even come when Mark Sanchez struggled so badly that he was benched for the first time in his career. Instead of going with Tebow, the No. 2 quarterback on the depth chart, Ryan went with third-stringer Greg McElroy. Tebow now had a bruised ego to go along with the two broken ribs that limited him earlier in the season.

"Every opportunity you get, you want to make the most of," Tebow said a few weeks before the season ended, "and I'd have loved to have more of an opportunity to just play quarterback."

Acquiring Tebow ultimately led to Tannenbaum and Sparano losing their jobs. And, it clouded Tebow's prospects in the NFL. No matter what, though, he insists he's a quarterback.

Eric Crouch, a fellow former Heisman Trophy winner, knows what he's going through. Crouch was Tebow before Tebow, a tremendous athlete who played quarterback at the University of Nebraska but was told he'd have to switch positions to have a future in the NFL.

"I came out of a running attack at Nebraska where we didn't read a whole lot of passing defenses," said Crouch, now a college analyst for Fox Sports. "So, I was probably a much bigger project than what Tebow is. Sometimes you get labeled a running quarterback, but what you want is to be labeled a dual threat or a passing quarterback who can run."

Crouch was drafted in the third round in 2002 as a wide receiver by St. Louis, switched to safety and was in camp with Green Bay and Kansas City the next few years before playing in NFL Europe. In 2006, he played three games at quarterback for Toronto of the CFL. Crouch is done with football now after giving it one final shot with his hometown Omaha Nighthawks of the United Football League in 2011.

"Listen, I learned a long time ago that I should've just done what I felt was the right thing to do, which was hold out on people changing me to what they think was best for me," Crouch said. "I was playing quarterback since I was 9 years old. I think the most important thing I would tell Tim is, you've got to listen to yourself on this one.

"There are going to be a lot of people telling Tebow what he should or shouldn't do."

Like the folks who insist a position switch is the only way Tebow will remain in the NFL ? whether that's as a tight end, receiver, halfback, fullback or safety.

"I just don't think he will ever be a quarterback in the NFL," Brandt said. "I think he's really smart, but I don't think he has the mental quickness at the position. The second thing is, he just is not accurate."

Tebow, reportedly working out in Arizona with a personal trainer, could still land somewhere in the league as a project for an offensive coordinator willing to learn from the Jets' mistakes.

"He's still worth a try and I think somebody will sign him, but it'll be under the condition that it will be as something other than as a quarterback," said Brandt, who thinks Tebow will stay on offense. "If Al Davis were still here, he'd take him in a second and try to turn him into a tight end for the Raiders."

Or, Tebow could simply swallow his pride, head to Canada and become a huge star there with the CFL's wide-open fields. And then, who knows? Maybe he would come back to the United States ? the same route Warren Moon, Doug Flutie and Jeff Garcia took to NFL stardom.

"There's no shame at all in going to the CFL," Crouch said. "They'd take him right now and he'd get a lot of tape, and if he's there two years, he'd have 50 games under his belt reading defenses and coverages. Let the NFL scouts make their decisions then.

"And, hey, he might have so much fun there actually playing, he might not want to ever come back."
