Report: Kevin Rose moving within Mountain View, now a partner at Google Ventures

Have you been wondering what Digg co-founder, Kevin Rose, has been up to since joining the Mountain View team a couple months back? Well, AllThingsD is reporting that Mr. Rose has left his duties as senior product manager of Big G's social network in order to make a move to the company's investment firm, Google Ventures. According to the report, the switch has now been confirmed by an undisclosed Ventures spokesperson, although no further details were given at this time. The move itself isn't exactly a surprising one, given Rose's previous, and hefty history of venturing into startups within the industry. Marriage may make people happier

ScienceDaily (May 30, 2012) ? Married people may be happier in the long run than those who aren't married, according to new research by Michigan State University scientists.

Their study, online in the Journal of Research in Personality, finds that although matrimony does not make people happier than they were when they were single, it appears to protect against normal declines in happiness during adulthood.

"Our study suggests that people on average are happier than they would have been if they didn't get married," said Stevie C.Y. Yap, a researcher in MSU's Department of Psychology.

Yap, Ivana Anusic and Richard Lucas studied the data of thousands of participants in a long-running, national British survey. They set out to find whether personality helps people adapt to major life events including marriage.

The answer, essentially, was no: Personality traits such as conscientiousness or neuroticism do not help people deal with losing a job or having a baby.

"Past research has suggested that personality is important in how people react to important life events," Yap said. "But we found that there were no consistent effects of personality in how people react and adapt to these major events."

In general, similar-aged participants who did not get married showed a gradual decline in happiness as the years passed.

Those who were married, however, largely bucked this trend. It's not that marriage caused their satisfaction level to spike, Yap noted, but instead kept it, at least, stable.

The study is slated to run in the October issue of the peer-reviewed research journal.

PETER GABRIEL New Blood - Live In London music review by Matti

I'm surprised to be only the third one to write about this DVD. The cover picture is bad (blood cells, right?) but the contents are most unique and interesting. I generally enjoyed it even if the album Scratch My Back failed to impress me. So, as you probably know, Peter is accompanied here by a large orchestra and no electric instruments of a rock band are used at all. That means the music has been given a whole new treatment. Funny thing is, often the difference doesn't seem so radical, mainly because for the vocal performances there are no big differences on many songs. On the other hand that's a pity (because the listener is already prepared for major differences), but on the other hand, it might turn out to be alienating (both for the liestener and for Peter Gabriel himself) with more radical changes in everything.

It's a hard task to compete with the rock approach familiar to the fan, but probably this project doesn't even care about that. And as someone said in the the extra film "Blood Donors", there have been people who have enjoyed this concert but who are not fans of Gabriel albums at all. Over all mr. Metcalfe has done a fine job with the arrangements. The orchestra is used very thoughtfully: instead of full, string-heavy orchestral sound the arrangements favour more delicate nuances and variety. Gabriel is also accompanied by his daughter Melanie and youngish Norwegian artist Ane Brun (mainly on backing vocals but each gets a duet; Ane is great on 'Don't Give Up').

Track selection is very good, with seldom heard early jewels like 'Intruder', 'Wallflower', 'The Rhythm of the Heat' - plus 'San Jacinto', Red Rain' & 'Mercy Street', three of my all-time favourite PG songs. Generally this selection is quite far from the hits / best known songs, though inclusions such as 'Solsbury Hill', 'Biko', 'In Your Eyes' (with guest vocals of African lady Sevara Nazarkhan) and 'Digging in the Dirt' are wise. Gabriel has notably grown older (in a charming and elegant way!) but his vocals still work like hell.

The visual side is a bit too digital and postmodern for my taste, but quite well in balance with the artist and his own style. Despite that 'coldness' in the visual effects, the concert does have some warmth, and I'd recommend this to Gabriel fans.

Australasia-Based Investors in Private Real Estate Funds - May 2012

There are presently 96 Australasia-based institutions that have an investment preference for private real estate funds. These investors collectively manage over $891bn in assets, of which approximately $60bn is allocated to the real estate asset class.

Superannuation schemes comprise the majority of Australasia-based private real estate fund investors, accounting for 78% of the total. These include AUD 9.5bn superannuation fund HOSTPLUS, which invests in private real estate vehicles across Asia, Australasia and various emerging markets. The superannuation scheme is looking to boost its portfolio?s emerging markets exposure to 50% through private real estate fund investments, equity mandates and infrastructure projects. Asset managers and insurance companies represent 9% and 3% of Australasian private real estate investors respectively, while a mix of sovereign wealth funds, endowments, government agencies and pension funds make up the remaining 10%.

Australian institutions account for an overwhelming 95% of Australasian private real estate fund investors, with the remaining 5% located in New Zealand and Papua New Guinea. Australia-based Challenger is an active investor in private real estate funds and has a wide-ranging portfolio that includes core, core-plus, distressed and debt vehicles.? The AUD 30bn asset manager plans to continue investing in private real estate funds over the course of 2012.

Core is the most popular investment strategy amongst Australasia-based private real estate fund investors, with 87% of these LPs interested in such vehicles. Value-added and opportunistic funds are the next most preferred, with 48% and 47% of Australasian investors concentrating on these strategies respectively. Thirty-five percent of Australasia-based private real estate investors have an appetite for core-plus funds, while 16% prefer funds with a debt focus. Private real estate funds with distressed strategies appear to be viewed as the least attractive at present, with only 9% of Australasia-based investors favouring these vehicles.

Small business shuns health care tax credit - Finance news. My ...

A tax credit meant to help millions of small businesses afford health coverage for their employees was claimed by only 170,300 last year, a government watchdog has found.

The Government Accountability Office report, made public this week, is the latest to highlight the shortcomings of the tax credit, which has been criticized for being too weak and complex.

The report noted that only a fraction of those eligible have used the assistance. Between 1.4 million and 4 million small businesses were eligible for the tax credit, according to GAO.

The tax credit, enacted as part of the 2010 Affordable Care Act, is aimed at defraying the high cost of health coverage. It is available to companies that have 25 or fewer workers, pay average salaries of $50,000 or less and cover at least half of employee health insurance premiums.

Health care reform isn?t a job killer - yet

Many small employers have told CNNMoney that they found the tax credit program to be too confusing ? and often too costly ? to be worth the accounting endeavor.

So many small firms are forgoing the extra cash that $20 billion dollars meant to go to small businesses over the next decade won?t be distributed, according to the Congressional Budget Office.

The GAO report noted the credit "was not large enough to incentivize employers to begin offering insurance." According to the report, the average credit was $2,700.

Worse still, company owners were deterred from making claims because of the confusing way the credit is calculated online payday loan lenders. The formula includes odd features, such as counting some workers as 1/15th of an employee and reducing federal help if a firm insures more workers.

The GAO suggested that the Internal Revenue Service revise its procedures and take a softer approach with companies that make mistakes on credit applications.

Included in the report was a response from IRS Deputy Commissioner Steven Miller, who agreed with some suggestions but said his agency had conducted "significant outreach" to small businesses.

President Obama has also suggested changes that would simplify and expand the tax credit for businesses this year.

A Treasury Department spokesperson on Tuesday noted that new tax credits take some time to gain popularity and that the IRS plans to ramp up outreach.

Treasury had previously told CNNMoney that nearly 309,000 small businesses received the credit for 2010 as of late last year. That number counted individual partners at firms, not actual employers.

It is possible the entire tax credit program could be scrapped depending on how the U.S. Supreme Court rules in the case challenging the 2010 law?s constitutionality. A ruling is expected next month.?

Virginia Family Tree Genealogy: Lett Portrait Gallery - Revoked!

In my last blog post, My New Lett Family Portrait Gallery!, I wrote about a distant cousin who showed up at my house with a great collection of family portraits and basically gave them to me.? I was so enthused when she gave them to me, it took days for the thought to settle into my brain that this was real.? I was on cloud nine.? HOWEVER, I never got comfortable with the idea that the portraits were really mine.? I did not hang them.? The only thing I did was make nice copies for myself.? I had a feeling it was too good to be true...and it was.

After about two weeks, I got an email from the distant cousin.? She was basically asking me to return the photos, that her brother was upset that she had given them away without consulting him.? Keep in mind, the photos were in storage for 13 years, and now everyone wants them.? So, here is where I will teach you a little genealogy lesson...I gave them back to her, no questions asked.? It was hard to do, but I did it.

The lesson here is that there is a lot of karma with genealogy.? We all know that possession is 9/10's of the law so I probably could have kept the portraits legally.? They were mine, fair and square, but I gave them back willingly.? I was totally happy that I got to see them to start with, even better that I had a couple weeks with them to look at them and make nice copies.??

I can promise you that my taking the high road will pay off eventually.? That side of the family will probably hear that I am a pretty nice guy.? Maybe there are other photos out there, maybe a Bible or some other relict, that I will get access to one day.? If I were a jerk about it, I would never have any chance of getting in good with them again.? No sense in cutting my nose off to spite my face.? There was also no sense in causing a rift between this cousin and her brother.? (I am sure our ancestors would have disapproved if I let that happen).

In a way, the whole experience was a blessing.? I got to see some great photos.? My kids became involved with genealogy for the first time, getting to see the pictures and to ask questions about them.? My son was psyched with helping me take photos of them, even wanting to pose with them himself.? My daughter did not like them as much and she was glad to see them go.? (She thought they smelled bad, as 100+ year old items from storage tend to do!)??

Overall, I have no complaints.? Now that they are gone, at least my daughter will come back into my office...since the air has cleared.? Who knows, maybe the brother will think they smell bad too and send them back my way?? Stranger things have happened.
