Chinese toddler left for dead in hit-and-run crash dies in hospital

Summary of story from BBC News, October 21, 2011

A two-year-old Chinese girl, who was run over by two vans and ignored by 18 passers-by in a busy market place in southern China, has died.

Wang Yue was knocked down by a van while wandering through a market, where her parents run a shop. The driver did not stop after hitting her.

In the following minutes, surveillance footage showed a number of people walking past the bleeding and unconscious child. Another van drove over her legs, but no-one stopped to help.

The footage caused outcry on China?s social networking sites, with many questioning the country?s sense of morality.

A rubbish collector who finally helped the child, moving her to the side of the street, was hailed a national hero.

Doctors had earlier said that Wang Yue, who remained in a coma since the incident on 13 October, was unlikely to live.? A spokesman for the hospital told the AFP news agency that Wang Yue had died of ?systemic organ failure?.

Police have detained the drivers of both vehicles involved in the incident, which happened in the city of Foshan in southern Guangdong Province.

A shopkeeper from the market where the incident took place said she had been sickened when she saw the footage.

?Every time I watch it, my heart breaks,? said Hu Haiou. ?I catch the news every night to see if she?ll survive. The people who walked by were shameful.?
