Carpet Floor | Home Improvement Interior Design Inspiration

Installation of carpet floors can be done by home-owners. It can be installed with a little practice and preparation. On one hand, it saves money which is spent on installation by professionals while on the other hand it provides the luxury of determining the pace of work. However, self-installation may lead to damages and cancellation of manufacturers? warrantee but these risks can be decreased by following the instructions recommended by manufacturers.

Prior to installing carpet, one must ensure that the sub-floor is clean and flat. It should be clear of holes, cracks or ridges, and at least 65 degrees Fahrenheit for perfect stretching and wearing of the carpet. In order to eschew any future problems, it is better to clean the floor with trisodium phosphate (TSP) and let it dry for a few days before installation.

Basically, there are two methods of carpet installation: the stretch-in method and the glue-down method.

In stretch-in method carpet is fitted by attaching it to the tackless strips. The carpet is cut in accordance with the dimension of the room and then stretched down over a pad. Thus this method involves two processes:? First, install the tackless strip all around the room where you want to install the carpet.? The strips should be 1/4? or 1/2? off from the wall. Once you have installed tackless strip, start stretching carpet in one corner of the room and use the soft wooden hammer to stretch and secure the carpet to the tackless strip. Follow the same way for installing it to the whole room.

The stretch method is more suitable for residential settings and provides higher insulation, noise reduction and greater cushion. Its removal is easier than the glue down method.?However, this installation should be avoided in high traffic areas or places where humidity is in excess.

The glue-down method works better in heavy traffic and ramp areas. Apply the adhesive material onto the sub-floor with the help of trowel to spread it properly. At this point seal all the seams if present in the area. While unrolling your carpet, lay it down on the glue and ensure that the carpet is tightly connected with the glue. Once you have laid the carpet on the floor, trim excesses, if any, along all walls. Be cautious that you are only trimming, not pulling, the loose fibers.
