This morning, the Israeli government shortened the timeline for construction of the Israel-Egypt border fence. Its construction?important for both peace and security?received prior approval from and has been coordinated with the Egyptian authorities. PM Benjamin Netanyahu visits Israel-Egypt border fence. Photo: GPO. The border fence along the International Border Line (IBL) with Egypt is expected to be completed in September 2012. Israel?s border with Egypt, its second-longest, stretches for over 200 km. Israel faces many challenges in securing the Israel-Egypt border?given a high rate of border infiltrations and the constant threat of criminal activity and terrorist operations in the Sinai Peninsula. Early this week, Israeli army radio reported that an IDF patrol jeep was fired at from the Egyptian border. No injuries or damage were reported. Following the multi-pronged terror attack on August 18, the IDF went on high alert along the Israel-Egypt border. The IDF is working to maintain calm in southern Israel, while acting swiftly and determinately against terrorists.
